Apparition or Lucky Dragon

This story is getting picked up because of a Resemblance to a scary apparition hiding in the corner but I noticed that there is also a lucky dragon here . . . it is Falcor - in the girl's hand!

"Students taking a photo in the toilets at Rizal High School in the Philippines were shocked to find a mysterious figure in the bottom right-hand corner of their shot. The Isidro Rodriguez Building has been haunted since the 1980s. Apparently other students have also reported ghostly goings on, and the school is considering having the building blessed in an attempt to deal with the issue."

If a news agency covers the art of Extractionism and the artists who Recognize the Resemblances, you can bet you will see it featured here:
Trump is Buttah! A woman in Missouri has found Donald Trump’s face in a tub of butter. Jan Castellano of Wildwood sent the picture to her local TV channel, KSDK, after Recognizing Trump's likeness in a package of Earth Origins Organic Spread.

Most Astronomers are also Extractionists

Most Astronomers are also Extractionists

Astronomers are often brilliant Extractionists! This amazing article by Joe Rao really explores the idea of Recognizing Resemblances in the stars above:

"Out of the 88 star patterns that are officially recognized as constellations, Sagittarius may be the one in which you can see the widest variety of forms. And all will be on display this week, when Sagittarius appears low to the southern horizon a couple of hours after sunset.

Although tracing out an Archer-Centaur among Sagittarius' stars does require some imagination, visualizing it as a Teapot is quite easy. In fact, it is the Teapot and not the Archer that is usually portrayed on most star charts and in observing guides. I often wonder, who was the first to visualize these stars as resembling a teapot? It does not appear in any astronomy guides or star books prior to the early 1930s. I myself find it a truly delightful pattern: As star pictures go, it's one of the best.

During the 1970s, the late astronomy popularizer George Lovi (1939-1993) pointed out that we could augment our tea service with a teaspoon and lemon as well. Lovi's "teaspoon" comprises stars in northern Sagittarius, while his "lemon" is an alternate rendition of the nearby Southern Crown."

Faces of Fire

Faces of Fire

A photograph of the inferno which devastated a Llanelli church two nights ago has attracted widespread attention online for a seemingly supernatural reason.

The picture, taken by Robert Davies on his phone, shows flames engulfing the roof of Park Church with smoke pouring out of the windows.

However, many people who have seen it online claim they can see images of faces in the flames.

This sparked claims it was photoshopped on social media, Mr Davies rebuked the accusations and said: "It is 100 per cent not photoshopped!

"I took it on my phone and uploaded it to Facebook straight away."

In the photo, I found 6 faces and 3 sets of eyes. How many do you see?

NASA captures Earth flyby of space peanut

There are 'peanut asteroids' flying around in space!

"Radar imaging has shown that about 15 per cent of near-Earth asteroids larger than 600 feet, including 1999 JD6, have this sort of lobed, peanut shape," said Lance Benner of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, in a statement.

NASA scientists have captured a peanut-shaped asteroid that approached close to Earth last weekend. The next time an asteroid will approach Earth this close will be in 2054.
On July 24, the asteroid made its closest approach to Earth at a distance of about 7.2 million kms, or about 19 times the distance from Earth to the moon.

Ghost and child

Natasha Oilver and her friends had just gone to see a World Cup match and stopped to rest and take some pictures near a house under construction in the ancient English town of Wem, Shropfordshire. Later, looking through their photos, they noticed something that caught their eye; an image that appears to be that of a ghostly woman and baby peering through a second-story window.

How Well Can You Actually See Colors?

My results: "You got 9 out of 9 right! Superhuman Vision You can see every color in the spectrum and then some. Your vision defies conventional logic, and is on par with Superman. You probably even have X-ray vision and can see the future as well." The blue and purple were the harder ones to discern.

Doppelganger

What is it called when one human resembles another human of a different blood type? A doppelgänger. And according to James Martin, it's been something of a curse as of late.

"Although he has cashed in on his close similarity to the Dublin star by working as a Farrell impersonator, single James said: “I’m single and struggle to get a nice girl.

“They assume I’m a typical hell-raising womaniser, and some [women] are weird about how much I look like Colin.

“Some [women] I don’t like, as they like Colin and I’m worried it’s not me they actually like.”"

turnOmatic White Swiss Shepherd Pup

July 25th, 2015

While sitting in the waiting area of the Department of Public Safety with my Turn-O-Matic ticket that said I was number 59 in the G line, I quickly recognized a resemblance. The black triangle, letting you know to pull down and towards you, looks like a nostril at the end of a snout and the tear away tabs at the top become ears. This new image is available at my on-line store where you can choose to have this on a throw pillow, greeting card, shower curtain or tote bag to name a few.

A horse has a horse, of course, of course

Did you know da Vinci, in his book A Treatise on Painting, spoke on the subject of Recognizing Resemblances? What a perfect name for a horse sporting a resemblance of a horse! Excerpt from Chap. CLXIII.—The Method of awakening the Mind to a Variety of Inventions.

"I will not omit to introduce among these precepts a new kind of speculative invention, which though apparently trifling, and almost laughable, is nevertheless of great utility in assisting the genius to find variety for composition.

By looking attentively at old and smeared walls, or stones and veined marble of various colours, you may fancy that you see in them several compositions, landscapes, battles, figures in quick motion, strange countenances, and dresses, with an infinity of other objects. By these confused lines the inventive genius is excited to new exertions." Read more page 84: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/46915/46915-h/46915-h.htm

Da Vinci the foal was born at 5am on the 27th of May over at the Fyling Hall School and is world famous due to the Resemblance of a horse's profile complete with its own distinct mane!

This is not a wig on the forest floor - it just Resembles one

Delicate strands of extraordinarily thin ice grow out of rotting tree branches like hairs on a head. The ephemeral hair ice can last for only a few hours to a few days if the temperature stays freezing. Researchers have known since 2005 that cold-tolerant fungi are responsible for the tufts of ice, but only recently uncovered the species responsible for the ice growth, the chemical composition of the melted hair ice, and just how the fungi stimulate the unique ice growth. It was first described almost 100 years ago in 1918 by geophysicist and meteorologist Alfred Wegener (who is famous for originating the theory of continental drift in 1912). At that time, he proposed that the unusual ice formation was probably due to fungus growing on the damp and decomposing wood.

Recognizing Resemblances in a Jackson Pollock

Recognizing Resemblances in a Jackson Pollock

My earliest Extractions were from my own scribbles. Then, I created work that involved the patron by Extracting Resemblances from their scribbles. I also began to Extract from drip paintings on canvas treating them like scribbles and adding tonal gradation and color to the white background between the lines.

Considering Jackson Pollock's intent was to free line from the representational image and make it a function of pure movement, I thought it the natural next progression in art history's break down of the image from representational to abstract to now come back around in the cycle and build the image back up - using a Pollock of course.

I chose No. 14 also titled 'Gray'. Beautiful black lines laid down over a still-wet gessoed back ground. This gives the lines a kind of gray halo. I will use color and shading to ferret out a scene of representational art and will post it here as soon as it is done.

Another Extractionist Artist Found in Finland

J-P Metsävainio is an accomplished astrophotographer from Finland. After a 2 month stretch of cloudy skies above disabling his ability to capture the universe, he began to look back at photos he'd taken in the past and that's when Resemblances sprang to life!

Using the typical Extractionist technique of before and after, he has set up a gallery of Extractions that he has Recognized in the nebulae, galaxies, and other cosmic objects. The puma pictured here is from the Rosette Nebula & a star cluster NGC 2239 located at Ra 06h 33m 45s Dec +04° 59′ 54″

The Universe Sends a Text-Based Emoticon

The best part of the art of Recognizing Resemblances and then Extracting them, is the fact that it is one of the few art forms regularly covered by news agencies the world over. Our latest Resemblance has popped up in the skies above. I have created this text-based emoticon to mimic what galaxy cluster SDSS J1038+4849 seems to be illustrating (° ͜・ ° )

According to the Hubble Telescope website: "You can make out its two orange eyes and white button nose. In the case of this “happy face”, the two eyes are very bright galaxies and the misleading smile lines are actually arcs caused by an effect known as strong gravitational lensing.

Galaxy clusters are the most massive structures in the Universe and exert such a powerful gravitational pull that they warp the spacetime around them and act as cosmic lenses which can magnify, distort and bend the light behind them. This phenomenon, crucial to many of Hubble’s discoveries, can be explained by Einstein’s theory of general relativity.

In this special case of gravitational lensing, a ring — known as an Einstein Ring — is produced from this bending of light, a consequence of the exact and symmetrical alignment of the source, lens and observer and resulting in the ring-like structure we see here."

2008 - 2009 Commission

2008 - 2009 Commission

My latest commission is my last of 2008 and also my first of 2009. Dr. Arturo Espinoza of Austin Texas has asked me to creat a piece for his new home. The dimensions are 40" x 30" x 1.5". My usual technique is to extract representational imagery from abstract patterns. In this case, Dr. Espinoza has asked me to extract another abstract pattern. I will be updating this blog as I progress. As of today I have spent 14 hours applying the first layer of color to the white canvas. Time is eaten up quickly at this stage as I am having to color around every line in the drip painting! The first layer is a canary yellow with an amberish color as the goal.
